Dr. Peni Telavi

Dr. Peni Telavi is a medical officer at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) in Funafuti, Tuvalu, focusing on maternal and child health for this tiny Pacific nation. He has completed EmONC (Emergency Obstetric and Neonatal Care) training and UNFPA Pacific maternal health capacity-building programmes. He completed a clinical obstetric attachment at Colonial War Memorial Hospital, Fiji, and undertook WHO training on IMCI for outer island health workers. He participates in POLHN continuing medical education.

Dr. Telavi's clinical practice covers the full scope of maternal and child health needs in Tuvalu. In obstetrics, he manages antenatal care including gestational diabetes screening, hypertension in pregnancy, and high-risk pregnancy monitoring. He manages labour and delivery and handles obstetric emergencies, with complex cases requiring evacuation to Fiji coordinated through the government's medical referral programme.

In child health, Dr. Telavi manages neonatal complications, childhood malnutrition (including therapeutic feeding for severely malnourished children), respiratory infections, diarrhoeal disease, and anaemia. He coordinates Tuvalu's expanded immunisation programme and provides growth monitoring and developmental assessment. He also manages climate-related health conditions in children following flooding events.

Dr. Telavi is dedicated to serving Tuvalu's women and children and to improving health outcomes in one of the world's most climate-vulnerable small island nations. He has contributed to maternal health data through the Tuvalu Ministry of Health and participated in UNFPA Pacific maternal health assessments.

He collaborates with UNICEF Tuvalu, WHO, and climate and health researchers who study Tuvalu as a frontline case for climate change impacts on maternal and child health. His work on managing waterborne disease outbreaks affecting children during flooding events has contributed to Tuvalu's climate health adaptation plan.

Princess Margaret Hospital provides maternal and child health services for all Tuvaluan residents, including those on the outer atolls. Complex obstetric cases and seriously ill children requiring specialist care not available in Tuvalu are referred to Fiji through the medical referral programme.

International visitors to Tuvalu who are pregnant or have children needing medical care should attend PMH in Funafuti. Comprehensive medical evacuation insurance is essential, as there are no specialist medical services in Tuvalu.

Dr. Telavi has been recognised by the Tuvalu Ministry of Health for his contributions to maternal and child health services at Princess Margaret Hospital. He has received acknowledgement from UNFPA Pacific for his work on improving antenatal care quality in Tuvalu and from UNICEF for childhood immunisation programme contributions.
