Dr. Vasyl Bondarenko

Dr. Vasyl Bondarenko is a senior neurosurgeon at the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute in Kyiv, Ukraine's foremost dedicated neurosurgical institution and one of the largest neurosurgery centers in Eastern Europe. With 22 years of surgical experience, he has performed over 4,000 cranial and spinal procedures.

The Romodanov Institute has continued to function despite the challenging circumstances in Ukraine since 2022, providing essential neurosurgical care including trauma management, brain tumor surgery, and spinal procedures. Dr. Bondarenko has remained at his post, providing expert neurosurgical care under difficult conditions.

He completed advanced neurosurgical training at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany, gaining expertise in neuroendoscopy and skull base surgery. He is one of Ukraine's leading specialists in neuroendoscopic procedures including endoscopic third ventriculostomy and endoscope-assisted cranial surgery.

Dr. Bondarenko is a Doctor of Medical Sciences — the highest academic degree in the Ukrainian system — and is a professor at the Bogomolets National Medical University. He has trained dozens of Ukrainian neurosurgeons throughout his career.

Dr. Bondarenko received his MD from Bogomolets National Medical University in Kyiv in 1999. He completed his neurosurgery residency at the Romodanov Neurosurgery Institute and undertook advanced neuroendoscopy training at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), Germany (2004–2005). His PhD was awarded by the Romodanov Institute in 2006 for research on hydrocephalus treatment outcomes. He subsequently completed his Doctor of Medical Sciences degree in 2015 for research on endoscope-assisted microsurgery outcomes. He is a member of the European Association of Neurosurgical Societies (EANS).

Dr. Bondarenko's primary surgical expertise is in neuroendoscopy and brain tumor surgery. He performs endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) for hydrocephalus, endoscope-assisted craniotomy for intraventricular tumors and colloid cysts, and minimally invasive approaches to deep brain lesions. In open brain tumor surgery, he performs craniotomies for gliomas, meningiomas, and metastatic tumors with neuronavigation and fluorescence guidance. In spinal surgery, he performs microdiscectomy, spinal cord tumor resection, and complex vertebral stabilization procedures.

Dr. Bondarenko has published over 40 peer-reviewed articles and authored textbook chapters in Ukrainian neurosurgery publications. His research focuses on neuroendoscopy outcomes, hydrocephalus management, and intraventricular tumor surgery. He has published in journals including Acta Neurochirurgica and the Ukrainian Neurosurgical Journal. He collaborates with neurosurgical centers in Germany and participates in EANS educational activities.

Dr. Bondarenko speaks Ukrainian, Russian, and English and provides telemedicine consultations for second opinions on neurological and neurosurgical conditions. The Romodanov Institute continues to see international patients for non-emergency neurosurgical conditions. Video consultations are available for MRI review and treatment planning. His extensive experience and the institute's large case volume make him a valuable resource for second opinions on complex brain and spinal conditions.

Dr. Bondarenko received the Ukrainian Association of Neurosurgeons Award for Excellence in 2016 and has been recognized for his contributions to neuroendoscopy development in Ukraine. He received the Romodanov Institute's Distinguished Neurosurgeon Award in 2020 and has been commended for his resilience and dedication in maintaining neurosurgical services during the challenging period since 2022.
