Dr. Jean-Pierre Lini

Dr. Jean-Pierre Lini is the senior physician in the Internal Medicine Department at Vila Central Hospital (VCH), Vanuatu's national referral hospital. With 13 years of internal medicine experience, Dr. Lini is one of Vanuatu's most experienced specialist physicians, managing the dual burden of tropical infectious diseases and rapidly rising non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in a Pacific island setting.

Vanuatu's health landscape is evolving rapidly: traditional infectious diseases such as malaria, typhoid, and leptospirosis remain common, while NCDs — particularly type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease — are becoming the dominant cause of adult morbidity and mortality. Dr. Lini's practice bridges this epidemiological transition, and he is a key adviser to the Vanuatu Ministry of Health on NCD prevention and management strategy.

Dr. Lini is trilingual in English, French, and Bislama, reflecting Vanuatu's distinctive bicultural heritage from its former joint British-French colonial administration. This linguistic versatility is essential for managing Vanuatu's diverse patient population effectively.

Dr. Lini completed his MBBS at the Fiji School of Medicine in Suva. He subsequently trained in internal medicine in the United Kingdom, earning Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom (MRCP UK) — a globally recognised specialist qualification in internal medicine.

He holds a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) from the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, which provided him with advanced training in malaria, tuberculosis, and other tropical infections. He has completed WHO training in NCD management adapted for Pacific health systems and participated in clinical attachments at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, Australia, focusing on diabetes and renal medicine.

Dr. Lini's clinical expertise spans both infectious and non-communicable diseases. In infectious disease, he manages malaria (including severe cases), typhoid, leptospirosis, and tropical respiratory infections. He is VCH's lead clinician for severe and complicated malaria management.

In NCDs, Dr. Lini manages type 2 diabetes — including insulin initiation and diabetic complication prevention — hypertension, dyslipidaemia, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease. He performs bedside ECG interpretation, pleural aspiration for pleural effusion, and lumbar puncture for meningitis investigation. He coordinates with Fiji or Australia for specialist procedures such as echocardiography or renal dialysis initiation not available in Vanuatu.

Dr. Lini is dedicated to serving Vanuatu's communities and to strengthening the evidence base for Pacific island health practice. He has contributed to NCD prevalence data in the Vanuatu NCD STEPS Survey and presented clinical findings at the Pacific NCD Forum hosted by the Pacific Community (SPC).

He collaborates with the WHO Pacific Office and the Vanuatu Ministry of Health on NCD guidelines adaptation for the Pacific island context and has contributed to clinical protocols for malaria management used by VCH and provincial hospitals. He is a participant in the Pacific NCD Alliance professional network.

Vila Central Hospital's internal medicine department manages patients from across Vanuatu's 80+ inhabited islands, including inter-island referrals for conditions beyond provincial hospital capacity. International visitors who develop medical conditions during their stay in Vanuatu can access VCH's outpatient services.

Complex cases requiring specialist procedures — echocardiography, coronary angiography, advanced oncology — are referred to Fiji or Australia. Dr. Lini can provide initial management and referral letters for patients needing overseas specialist care. Medical evacuation insurance is recommended for all visitors to Vanuatu.

Dr. Lini has been recognised by the Vanuatu Ministry of Health for his leadership of VCH's internal medicine department and his contributions to the national NCD programme. He received a Pacific Community (SPC) NCD Award for clinical contributions to NCD management in Vanuatu and has been acknowledged by the WHO Pacific Office for participation in Pacific NCD prevention activities.
