Lautoka Hospital

Lautoka Hospital is Fiji's second-largest public hospital, located in the city of Lautoka on the western coast of Viti Levu, Fiji's main island. With approximately 330 beds, it serves as the divisional hospital for the Western Division, which includes the provinces of Ba, Nadroga-Navosa, and Ra, covering a large and densely populated region of Fiji.

Operated by the Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services, Lautoka Hospital provides a comprehensive range of medical services including general medicine, general surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, and emergency care. The hospital serves as a referral center for the numerous health centers and subdivisional hospitals in the Western Division, handling cases that require specialist attention beyond what smaller facilities can provide.

The hospital plays a critical role in the health infrastructure of western Fiji, a region that includes significant agricultural communities, the tourism corridor of the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, and the industrial city of Lautoka itself. Its emergency department is the primary point of care for trauma and acute illness in the region.

Lautoka Hospital has undergone periodic upgrades to its facilities, though like many Pacific Island hospitals it continues to face challenges including specialist recruitment and retention. Cases requiring highly specialized care beyond the hospital's capacity are referred to CWMH in Suva or, in some instances, to hospitals in Australia or New Zealand.

Lautoka Hospital serves primarily the local Fijian population of the Western Division. However, due to its proximity to Fiji's major tourism areas — including Nadi International Airport, the Mamanuca Islands, and the Yasawa Islands — the hospital regularly treats international tourists who experience medical emergencies while on holiday.

As a government hospital, Lautoka does not have a dedicated international patient department. However, all medical staff communicate in English, and the hospital's emergency department operates around the clock. Tourists requiring emergency care, including injuries from water sports, accidents, and acute illness, are routinely managed at Lautoka Hospital.

International visitors should note that as a public facility, amenities may be more basic than what is available at private hospitals. For non-emergency specialist care, visitors may consider private clinics in the Nadi-Lautoka corridor. Medical evacuation to Australia or New Zealand can be arranged for cases requiring advanced specialist treatment not available in Fiji.
