Ten years ago our leader and chairman of Cumballa Hill Hospital & Heart Institute, Dr.K.R. Dr.K.R.Shetty spent 15 years in USA where he acquired both his Undergraduate and Postgraduate medical education, and then attained the position of Assistant Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at the prestigious University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. On his return to India in 1969, he was appointed as Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon to the J.J.Group of Hospitals and Grant Medical College, Mumbai from where he retired as Director Professor of Cardiovascular surgery. He has presided over the first World Conference on Open Heart Surgery in 1985 and also the second World Conference on Open Heart Surgery in 1991, both held in Mumbai. He is one of the pioneers in coronary bypass surgery and was the first one to perform triple coronary bypass surgery in India in 1977. He was elected as the president of the Asian Congress of Thoracic and Cordiovascular Surgery held at Bangkok in 2001.
With his vast experience that he has in medical education, Dr.Shetty has been nominated to the Medical Council of India as a member and also to the postgraduate committee of the Medical Council of India, by the Government of India.
