Founded in 1987 by Dr. G.N. Rao and named in memory of the legendary Telugu film actor Lakshmikant Pyare Lal Prasad, LVPEI operates from its quaternary care campus in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, along with a network of secondary and primary vision centres across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and other states. LVPEI is internationally recognised for its excellence in corneal transplantation (one of the highest volumes in the world), retinal diseases, glaucoma, paediatric ophthalmology, and ocular oncology. The institute holds JCI and NABH dual accreditation, and partners with leading ophthalmology institutions worldwide for research and training. It serves patients from all socio-economic backgrounds — offering free care to those who cannot afford it, cross-subsidised by paying patients.

LVPEI provides sub-specialty eye care at the highest level across cornea and anterior segment diseases (corneal transplantation — PK, DSAEK, DALK, DMEK — keratoconus management, corneal dystrophies, and stem cell transplantation for ocular surface disorders), retina and vitreous diseases (medical and surgical retina including diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment, macular holes, uveitis, and complex vitreoretinal surgery), glaucoma diagnosis and management (medical, laser, and surgical including trabeculectomy and tube shunts, plus advanced imaging), paediatric ophthalmology and strabismus (childhood cataract, ROP screening, amblyopia, squint surgery), cataract surgery with premium IOL implantation, refractive surgery (LASIK, LASEK, ICL implantation), oculoplasty and orbital surgery, neuro-ophthalmology, and ocular oncology (uveal melanoma, retinoblastoma). The institute's L.V. Prasad Eye Bank is one of the world's busiest, providing quality-assured corneal tissue for transplantation.
