National Skin Centre

The National Skin Centre (NSC) is Singapore's national specialist centre for dermatology, serving as the primary public sector referral institution for all skin conditions. NSC commenced operations on 1 November 1988, taking over the treatment of skin diseases from the former Middle Road Hospital. It is a government restructured institution and a subsidiary of the National Healthcare Group (NHG), operating under the NHG vision of 'Adding years of healthy life to the people of Singapore.'

Located at 1 Mandalay Road, just minutes from Novena MRT station in central Singapore, NSC handles a patient load of approximately 1,000 patients every day — one of the highest daily patient volumes of any specialist outpatient centre in Southeast Asia. The centre serves patients across the full spectrum of dermatological conditions, from common skin disorders such as eczema and acne to complex autoimmune skin diseases, skin cancers, and rare genodermatoses.

NSC operates as a purely outpatient specialist centre — it does not have inpatient beds — focusing on high-volume, high-quality ambulatory dermatological care. The centre is staffed by a team of specialist dermatologists with subspecialty training in areas including Contact Dermatitis, Skin Lymphoma, Photomedicine, Laser Surgery, Hair and Nail Disorders, and Paediatric Dermatology.

As a tertiary healthcare institution, NSC provides specialised dermatological services, trains medical students and postgraduates, and undertakes research in dermatology. The centre is affiliated with Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, hosting dermatology training posts for medical students and residents.

NSC provides the full range of dermatological services through its specialist clinics and procedure suites, covering both medical and surgical dermatology.

Medical Dermatology services manage Eczema and Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, Contact Dermatitis and Occupational Skin Disease, Acne and Rosacea, Urticaria and Angioedema, Autoimmune Blistering Diseases (pemphigus, pemphigoid), Lupus and Connective Tissue Disease affecting the skin, Vitiligo, Alopecia and Hair Loss Disorders, Nail Disease, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) affecting the skin, Photosensitivity and Photodermatoses, Skin Infections (fungal, bacterial, viral), Paediatric Dermatology, and Geriatric Dermatology.

Surgical Dermatology services include Skin Cancer Surgery (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma), Mohs Micrographic Surgery for high-risk skin cancers, Dermoscopy-guided skin cancer evaluation, Laser Surgery for various skin conditions including pigmentation, scars, vascular lesions, and tattoo removal, and minor surgical procedures including biopsies, excisions, and cryotherapy.

Phototherapy services offer Narrowband UVB, PUVA, and Excimer laser treatment for psoriasis, vitiligo, eczema, and other phototherapy-responsive conditions. The NSC also runs a Photopatch Test Clinic for contact photodermatitis evaluation and a Patch Test Clinic for contact allergen identification, both important diagnostic tools for occupational skin disease.

The National Skin Centre is a purpose-built outpatient dermatology centre designed to accommodate its high daily patient volume efficiently and comfortably. As an outpatient-only specialist centre, its facilities are optimised for ambulatory diagnosis, treatment, and procedures rather than inpatient care.

The centre features multiple specialist consulting rooms staffed by NSC's team of dermatologists, a large Phototherapy Unit offering narrowband UVB and PUVA treatment booths for patients requiring regular light therapy, and a dedicated Laser Treatment Suite equipped with a variety of medical-grade lasers including CO2, Nd:YAG, pulsed dye, and excimer laser systems.

The centre's Surgical Suite performs Mohs micrographic surgery, excision of skin tumours, and other minor skin surgical procedures. The Patch Test Laboratory is equipped for standard and extended series contact allergen testing. The Dermoscopy Lab provides specialised imaging for skin cancer diagnosis. NSC's Clinical Laboratory holds ISO 15189:2003 accreditation for diagnostic laboratory quality, supporting accurate diagnosis through skin biopsies, mycological studies, and immunopathology.

Patient support facilities include a Patient Education Room providing information on skin conditions and treatments, a pharmacy dispensing dermatological medications, and a procedure waiting area. The centre's appointment system manages the high daily patient volume through specialised dermatology-focused clinic management software.

NSC's standing as Singapore's national dermatology specialist centre makes it a preferred destination for international patients with complex or refractory skin conditions that have not responded to treatment in their home countries. The centre receives patients from Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, India, and other countries in the region.

International patients can request an appointment at NSC by contacting the centre directly. Pre-visit, international patients are encouraged to prepare a summary of their skin condition history, prior treatments, and any biopsies or laboratory results for review by the NSC dermatologist. Interpretation services are available in English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil to support Singapore's multilingual patient population.

NSC coordinates with NHG's international patient services for patients who require coordinated care across multiple NHG institutions. For international patients with complex or potentially life-threatening skin conditions such as severe drug reactions (Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, TEN), autoimmune blistering diseases, or cutaneous lymphoma, NSC can facilitate urgent appointment scheduling and coordination with inpatient facilities at Tan Tock Seng Hospital for cases requiring admission.

Billing arrangements include self-pay and international insurance processing. NSC's fees for specialist outpatient consultations reflect government-subsidised rates for Singapore citizens and permanent residents, with full fees applicable to international patients.

The National Skin Centre is a government restructured institution regulated by the Ministry of Health Singapore and operates under the National Healthcare Group's clinical governance framework. MOH licensing ensures NSC meets established standards for specialist outpatient clinical practice, infection prevention, and patient safety.

NSC's Clinical Laboratory holds ISO 15189:2003 accreditation for medical laboratory quality management, confirming the accuracy and reliability of its diagnostic laboratory services. All NSC consultant dermatologists are registered as specialists with the Singapore Medical Council and hold Fellowship of the Academy of Medicine Singapore in Dermatology (FAMS).
