Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC)

The Singapore National Eye Centre (SNEC) is the designated national centre within Singapore's public sector healthcare network for specialised ophthalmological services. Incorporated in 1989 and commencing clinical operations in 1990, SNEC operates under the SingHealth cluster alongside Singapore General Hospital, the National Heart Centre Singapore, the National Cancer Centre Singapore, and the National Dental Centre Singapore.

Located at Third Hospital Avenue in the Outram Park healthcare campus, SNEC provides the complete spectrum of subspecialty eye care for Singapore's population and for international patients from across the region. Since opening, the centre has grown to perform over 14,000 major eye surgeries and 13,000 laser procedures annually, positioning it as one of the busiest eye centres in the Asia-Pacific region.

SNEC's mission is to advance ophthalmic science and service delivery in Singapore and the region. Beyond clinical care, SNEC actively conducts research into the causes and treatment of major eye conditions — particularly myopia, glaucoma, and diabetic eye disease — areas of special relevance given the high prevalence of these conditions in Asian populations. Thousands of ophthalmologists from across Asia and beyond attend SNEC's teaching courses and international conferences organised annually.

SNEC is affiliated with Duke-NUS Medical School and the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre, contributing to the training of ophthalmology residents and fellowship-trained subspecialists for Singapore and the region. The centre's research institute, the Singapore Eye Research Institute (SERI), is internationally recognised for epidemiological and clinical ophthalmology research.

SNEC provides comprehensive ophthalmological care through its subspecialty departments, covering virtually every condition that can affect the eye from the eyelids to the retina.

Cataract and Comprehensive Ophthalmology is the largest department, comprising 52 full-time dedicated ophthalmology specialists. Services include routine and complex cataract surgery, general eye examinations, and management of common eye conditions for patients without subspecialty needs.

Subspecialty departments include Corneal and External Eye Diseases (corneal transplantation, keratoplasty, management of corneal infections and dystrophies), Glaucoma (medical and surgical glaucoma management including trabeculectomy, tube shunts, and MIGS procedures), Medical and Surgical Retina (diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal detachment repair, vitrectomy), Refractive Surgery (LASIK, LASEK, SMILE, PRK, phakic IOL implantation), Myopia Control (childhood myopia management including orthokeratology, atropine, and novel interventions), Neuro-Ophthalmology (optic nerve and visual pathway disorders), Ocular Inflammation and Immunology (uveitis, scleritis, autoimmune eye disease), Oculoplastic, Orbital and Lacrimal Surgery (eyelid reconstruction, ptosis repair, tear drainage surgery, orbital tumours), and Paediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus (squint surgery, lazy eye treatment, paediatric eye disease).

SNEC is equipped with leading-edge ophthalmic technology across its outpatient consultation areas, operating theatres, imaging suites, and laser facilities. The centre's Phase 2 expansion has more than doubled its operating capacity from the original building.

Operating theatres are configured for all types of ophthalmic surgery including cataract surgery (phacoemulsification), corneal transplantation, glaucoma surgery, vitreoretinal surgery, oculoplastic procedures, and paediatric eye surgery. Dedicated laser suites host the full range of refractive laser platforms including SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction), LASIK, Excimer laser platforms, and the latest femtosecond laser systems for cataract and corneal procedures.

Imaging technology includes optical coherence tomography (OCT) and OCT-angiography for retinal imaging, confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (HRT for glaucoma), corneal topography and tomography (Pentacam, Scheimpflug imaging), anterior segment OCT, wide-field fundus photography, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography, and ultrasound biomicroscopy. SNEC's refraction clinic uses the latest automated phoropters and wavefront aberrometry. The centre has a dedicated Myopia Control Clinic using cycloplegic refraction, axial length measurement, and monitoring tools specific to childhood myopia management.

SNEC is a major destination for international patients seeking specialist eye care in Singapore. The centre receives patients from Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Myanmar, India, Vietnam, and across the Asia-Pacific region, attracted by SNEC's subspecialty expertise in conditions such as complex retinal disease, advanced glaucoma, refractive surgery, and challenging corneal disorders.

Interpreter services are available in English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil, with additional language support arrangeable through the SingHealth International Patients network. Billing covers self-pay (full fees for non-subsidised patients) and international insurance direct billing. For patients undergoing elective refractive surgery or other planned procedures, SNEC can provide detailed pre-operative assessment and treatment planning before or during a dedicated visit to Singapore. Post-operative telemedicine follow-up is available for international patients after they return home.

The Singapore National Eye Centre is regulated by the Ministry of Health Singapore and operates within the SingHealth cluster's comprehensive clinical governance framework. All ophthalmologists at SNEC are registered specialists with the Singapore Medical Council and hold fellowship qualifications from the Academy of Medicine Singapore, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (UK), or equivalent bodies.
