About Al Wasl Hospital (Now Latifa Hospital), Dubai
Al Wasl Hospital was inaugurated in 1986 as Dubai's first government hospital specializing exclusively in maternity, obstetrics, gynaecology, and paediatrics. Built on a 40,000 square metre site and originally equipped with 367 beds, the hospital was established during a period of rapid population growth in Dubai and quickly became the emirate's leading referral centre for women and children's healthcare. The facility was constructed under the direction of the Department of Health and Medical Services (DOHMS), the predecessor to the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), which now governs all public healthcare provision in Dubai.
In April 2012, the hospital was renamed Latifa Hospital by order of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in honour of his late mother, Sheikha Latifa bint Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The renaming recognized the hospital's foundational role in Dubai's maternal and infant health outcomes over more than two and a half decades. In October 2021, paediatric medical, surgical, and emergency services were transferred to the newly opened Al Jalila Children's Specialty Hospital, allowing Latifa Hospital to concentrate entirely on obstetrics and gynaecology as a dedicated women's health centre. The hospital now operates with approximately 253 beds and remains one of the largest and most active maternity hospitals in the UAE.
Medical Specialties and Services
Latifa Hospital (formerly Al Wasl) is a specialized women's health facility offering comprehensive obstetric and gynaecological services. Maternity care encompasses antenatal clinics, high-risk pregnancy management, labour and delivery (including water birth options), postnatal care, and lactation counselling. The hospital has consistently managed one of the highest delivery volumes in the UAE, handling tens of thousands of births per year across its history.
Gynaecological services include assessment and management of fibroids, endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), ovarian cysts, cervical conditions, and gynaecological cancers. Minimally invasive laparoscopic and hysteroscopic procedures are available alongside open gynaecological surgery. The hospital also provides fertility-related assessments and referrals. Following the 2021 transfer of paediatric services to Al Jalila Children's Hospital, neonatal intensive care (NICU) for newborns of mothers delivering at Latifa remains integrated with the maternity service.
Facilities and Technology
Latifa Hospital operates across an expansive 40,000 square metre campus with approximately 253 dedicated women's health beds following the 2021 service reconfiguration. The hospital features multiple delivery suites including equipped labour rooms, operating theatres for caesarean sections and gynaecological procedures, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) serving newborns requiring specialist care, and well-equipped diagnostic facilities.
Diagnostic imaging capabilities include obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound (2D and 4D), mammography, and general radiography. An on-site clinical laboratory provides haematology, biochemistry, microbiology, and blood banking services. Outpatient antenatal clinics, gynaecology consultation rooms, and a pharmacy serve patients receiving both inpatient and outpatient care. As a DHA-operated facility, the hospital follows public healthcare pricing structures, making it more accessible than many private alternatives for Dubai residents.
International Patient Services
As a Dubai Health Authority (DHA) government hospital, Latifa Hospital primarily serves UAE residents including Emirati nationals and the large expatriate population covered by Dubai's mandatory health insurance scheme. International patients visiting Dubai can access the hospital, though government hospitals in the UAE typically direct walk-in international patients through an initial assessment process.
The hospital's multilingual staff communicates in English, Arabic, Hindi, Urdu, and several other languages, reflecting Dubai's cosmopolitan population. International residents and visitors are advised to bring their UAE health insurance card or be prepared for direct self-pay at government hospital rates. The hospital's location in central Dubai makes it accessible via Dubai's metro network and road transport. Patients seeking high-risk obstetric care or complex gynaecological procedures from outside the UAE may contact the DHA patient services team for pre-arranged consultations.
Accreditations and Quality Standards
Latifa Hospital (formerly Al Wasl Hospital) was the first Dubai Health Authority (DHA) hospital to receive JCI (Joint Commission International) accreditation, achieving this distinction in 2007. This milestone was significant for Dubai's public healthcare sector, as JCI accreditation requires hospitals to meet international standards across patient safety, clinical quality, infection control, medication management, and governance — standards more commonly associated with private hospitals in the region.
The hospital is regulated and overseen by the Dubai Health Authority under the broader Dubai Health governance structure (which superseded DHA in recent years). As a government institution, it operates under DHA's clinical governance framework, which includes regular audits, peer review processes, and adherence to Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP) national standards. The hospital's long record of high-volume, high-acuity obstetric care has established it as a benchmark institution for maternal health in the UAE.
