A dependency alert is useful when a developer can identify what brought the package in, where it shipped, and what change would remove the risk. Software composition analysis, or SCA, helps answer those questions by identifying third-party components and matching them against known vulnerability data. Some tools also evaluate licenses and help route fixes.
Scan the repository and the artifact for different reasons
A repository scan can surface a dependency change while the pull request is still open. An artifact scan can reveal what actually shipped, including packages inherited from a container base image. The two results may differ for good reasons. A test dependency can appear in the repository without shipping, while an operating-system package can ship without appearing in the application lockfile.
Keep each finding tied to its source and scope. When a vulnerability is reported in a transitive dependency, developers need the parent dependency and affected version to decide whether to upgrade, override, or replace it.
Compare the remediation workflows
| Tool | Where to evaluate it | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| Snyk Open Source | Developer workflows built around source-control and CI scanning | Dependency resolution and fix guidance for your package managers |
| Mend SCA | Centralized dependency governance and prioritization | Reachability coverage for your languages and handling of exceptions |
| OWASP Dependency-Check | Teams that want a pipeline-controlled open-source scanner | Quality of CPE-based matching and how suppressions are reviewed |
Make the first policy narrow enough to enforce
Start by reporting existing findings without blocking all builds. For new findings, test a gate that considers the affected component, deployment exposure, and available remediation. Use reachability where the analysis supports it and give exceptions an owner and expiration date.
In a pilot, introduce a known vulnerable transitive dependency and follow it from pull request through deployment. If the tool can show what introduced it, who owns it, and which shipped versions are affected, the scan has become part of a workable remediation process.
